As you may or may not know, in addition to my coaching practice, I also work in a high school as an admin assistant to the principal. As you can imagine, the end of the school year can be quite busy – senior graduation, underclassman exams, wrapping up the school year.
Today was just one of those hectic days – lots of balls in the air. As I was scrambling to get next year’s calendar completed, I said to a co-worker and blessed friend – Man, I’ve got a lot of balls in the air right now and I’m afraid I’m going to drop one of them. Her reply stopped me in my tracks…
“Don’t think of them as balls, she said, think of them as balloons.” “What the heck does that mean?” I asked. She went on to explain that if you imagine them as balloons, all you need to do to be successful is to just keep tapping them to keep them afloat instead of trying to juggle eight different tasks (balls) simultaneously frantically trying not to drop one. I LOVED THIS VISUAL and immediately replied “Oh, that’s a blog…”
Your day is so full, you need to finish that report (TAP!), you wanted to go to the gym (TAP!), you didn’t call your mother’s doctor to follow up (TAP!), did you fill out the FAFSA form (TAP!), dog – groomer (TAP!), write that dreaded email (TAP!). You get the idea…Nothing dropped, just staying steady and strong.
So as I finish up this school year while running my coaching practice and getting my son through exams, and state exams while attending his five end-of-the-year performances, I will envision myself tapping beautiful happy-faced balloons through the air. I will save the juggling for the professionals.
I hope this visual helps you too!
As a certified life and personal time coach, I recognize how busy you’ve been over these past 50 or so years taking care of others, and I want to help you get your life back in balance. I want to help you sort things out, sharpen your focus, discover new energy and chart your course so that the next 50 will be the best 50.
Why? Because it’s about time! And it’s about YOU!
Wow, thanks Nancy! I love the visual! and it makes me smile! which is certainly beneficial when you’re stressed out of your mind. I can’t wait to share this with the mid-life Moms I know who are finding themselves in a similar boat. TAP!
Great idea! My grandson graduates tomorrow, my Mom, at 98, is here helping make food for tomorrow, and I have over 350 e-mails in my box. Wow! I’ll just keep tapping those balloons.
