Kelly just released a new album so she’s been in the news recently.  I’m not a crazy follower of Kelly.  In fact, I didn’t even watch American Idol when she was on.  I think I remember her winning, but I don’t think I watched AI as a loyal fan that season.

I’ve always enjoyed her music.  It’s been nice watching her grow up and attain great success.  What I think I like most about her, and I wish her well for this…She wasn’t a “one-hit” wonder. Her talent has kept her strong.  I’m sure she’s had her ups and downs, but it’s great to see her successful…growing along the way, maturing as she grows stronger.

But, here’s what I absolutely love about Kelly Clarkson.  If you’ve seen her recently promoting her new album, like me, you may have noticed that Kelly has gained some weight since she had her daughter, River, nine months ago.

I’m not going to lie…I notice it right away and I felt sadness for her.  And here’s why…I know firsthand what it’s like to struggle with weight…we all do, right?

But, as someone who is constantly preaching about how people are not their weight, I was ashamed of myself for latching onto her weight as the “thing” I noticed right away.  I didn’t notice what she was wearing or hear what she was saying…I fixated on the size of her body.

It wasn’t because she didn’t look good…it was because I felt bad for her that now she had to join the million other people like me to start the weight loss plan and get on the treadmill, join the morning yoga class…You know the drill.

So, you ask what did I learn from Kelly Clarkson?  I learned today that SHE DOESN’T CARE that she put on weight since having River.  She’s the happiest she’s ever been.  She doesn’t care what her critics think of her.  WHY?  Because she is NOT her weight.  She’s a new mom enjoying the joys of motherhood.  She recorded an album while she was pregnant…had a difficult time recording it because she was breathless from the pregnancy…AND the album still make it to number one.

She is NOT her weight…She’s beautiful whatever her size is.  Thank you, Kelly, for reminding this certified eating psychology coach who should know better that our size doesn’t mirror our happiness, our weight is not a reflection of who we are.

In a recent interview on Ellen, she said…“It’s like, you’re just who you are. We are who we are. Whatever size, and it doesn’t mean that we’re gonna be that forever,” she said. “That’s the thing. Sometimes we’re more fit. Like especially me, I’m such a creative person that I yo-yo. So sometimes I’m more fit, and I get into kickboxing hardcore. And then sometimes I don’t, and I’m like … I’d rather have wine.”

Thank you, Kelly, for reminding me and I humbly apologize to you for judging your weight instead of enjoying your beauty.

Always remember it’s about time we return to the heart.
